American Austin Car Co., Inc.
#N01039
1930, Delaware. Stock certificate for 10 shares. Orange/Black. Engraved vignette of Engraved vignette of allegorical male turning large wheel, Mercury and other figures. Produced in Butler, PA between 1930-34, the Austin was a tiny car, the first model being fully 16" narrower and 28" shorter than the next smallest regularly produced American automobile. While sales were made to such celebrities as Al Jolson, Buster Keaton and Ernest Hemingway, Americans were, in general, not ready for the economies of a small car, and the Austin was generally treated as a joke by cartoonists and comedians of the day. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1934 but, in 1937, the company reappeared as the American Bantam Car Company (1938-41). This company fared little better than the first, its only claim to fame being that it built the very first successful Jeep for the U.S. Army (1940). Uncancelled and extremely fine.
